Innovation in steel tubing hasn't stopped. Stainless steel inherent stiffness lets you build with small, graceful, tubing and its tensile strength allows for the tubing to be butted almost paper-thin. REASONS

Jaegher frames are made of high-end Italian steel. The steel alloys of the newest generation are ultra-lightweight. Jaegher works exclusively with the top of the range, Columbus Spirit and XCr tubes: reinforced at the ends, thin and light in the middle. Jaegher works in close partnership with Columbus Italia. Together we developed tubes and tube-sets to create unique frames that perform even better. This makes your Jaegher one of the best steel or stainless steel road bikes ever made – with a ride quality that is incomparable.

The weight of our frames rivals that of other materials. A Jaegher frame weighs between 1.2 and 1.8 kg. We have built complete road bikes with a weight of 6.7 kg, which is even under the UCI limit of 6.8kg — and the Tour de France. But on the other hand. Isn’t that weight thing overrated? Maybe because it’s the only thing we can do in the bicycle shop. Just lift the bike to feel how light it is. It’s also the only thing we can compare. Grams.

A lot of pro-riders are afraid of a road bike that is too light. Because every climb is followed by a descent. They don’t want – in the words of one of the best cyclists of the world – a road bike that feels like a dishcloth. A road bike needs to give you confidence on the hill, on the cobbles and when sprinting. But most important of all. Your race cycle has to give you endless pleasure and eternal satisfaction. And that is exactly what a Jaegher does.

The cutting edge steel tubes Jaegher uses for building it's tubesets is from Columbus Italia, the world’s oldest bicycle tubing manufacturer. Over the last 5 years Columbus has transformed from a high volume industrial manufacturer of performance bicycle tubing into a small laboratory dedicated to individually producing small batches of avant-garde steel tubes pushed to the absolute limits of their metallurgic possibilities. It was the company’s discovery and refinement of new “special steels” with greatly increased ductility and Ultimate Tensile Strength in the early 2000s which first paved the way for these changes. To put things in perspective: in the past even one-off special tubes, such as those Columbus produced for Francesco Moser’s hour record in 1984 or other custom-tweaked lots for demanding professional riders, were only drawn a maximum of 2 times, to arrive at wall thicknesses of 0,5mm. But the special steel alloys developed and worked by Columbus today – combined with the company’s ability to develop more complex, almost artisanal, production techniques – allow workers to
1 — draw each tube to wall thickness as thin as 0,38mm without compromising fatigue life, reducing contemporary steel frame weights by as much as 500 g and
2— draw each tube up to 4-5 times (with a 65% reduction of linear mass without annealing, compared to 55% in older steels). The ability to repeatedly draw a tube has allowed Columbus to radically alter the micrographic structure of the steel, making it far finer and more orientated than was ever previously possible. The result is a metallurgically flawless, ultralight, extremely stiff tube whose characteristics will remain entirely unaltered for generations of riding.

The most advanced result of this period of innovation has been the development of XCr, the world’s only bi-phasic martensitic seamless stainless steel bicycle tube. A Columbus XCr tube can reach wall thickness of 0,35mm and, crucially, is drawn 12-15 times. This unparalled possibility for repeated drawing cycles of the same tube allows Columbus to continuously enhance the already extraordinary intrinsic metallurgic qualities of XCr steel, resulting in a stiffness-to-weight and UTS/weight ratio superior to that of any titanium or aluminum currently in use for bicycle manufacturing.

Tubes

It’s not a secret. It’s too much about trends and fashion in the cycle-industry. Extreme oversized tubes, funny curves, ridiculous contrasts between thin and thick what results in dangerous limits on the most crucial zones of a race-cycle. We don’t go there. We don’t want to hide our geometry by making a race-cycle like a seasonal dress. Of course we are part of the evolution in positioning on the cycle, seeking for the most performant geometry, the composition of the steel tubes and welding techniques. On the other hand we don’t have the urge to hide those unbeatable and still most performant lines of a race-cycle. We are proud on them.

WE ONLY START WELDING YOUR FRAME after we know your measurements, your wishes and your needs.

Bespoke starts where made-to-measure stops. Bespoke fit much better than made to measure and takes much more time. Small, medium or large. All too often, this is your choice when you’re buying a new bike. Then you are fitted to the frame with a longer or shorter seatpost and stem, and a ridiculous amount of spacers on top, because your cycling shop has to get rid of their stock because the new collection with fancy colours is arriving. Obviously, mass manufacturers try to reduce their production costs, and they do this by limiting the number of moulds they need for the frame. At Jaegher we start with you. Our experts take your measurements, down to the last detail. Then we talk about what your expectations are — and only then we start building your frame, tube by tube. If you can’t come to us, go to your local expert for a bike fitting and send us your measurements. Welding a steel frame takes time and craftsmanship, but we wouldn’t do it any other way. Jaegher has stayed true to its steel roots in frame-building.

It’s not a very well-kept secret that some materials lose their strength with time. This includes the resin holding the fibres together in a carbon frame when microscopic cracks form in the layers. Another problem with carbon is it’s fragile. When hit hard it breaks. Jaegher frames are made of high-end Columbus Spirit and XCr alloys and are – what else? – hard as steel. They keep their strength for life. Did you ever wondered what happened with those high-end carbon frames after a race like Paris-Roubaix?

Carbon fibre has a dirty secret: the hi-tech material is extremely wasteful to produce and difficult to recycle. Unfortunately there’s still no effective way to recycle and reuse carbon fibre. In a Jaegher frame you won’t find any non-recyclable fibres : simply the best and most honest steel. And if there is an accident don’t throw your Jaegher frame on the rubbish pile – we can repair it.
We are not more holy than the Pope. There's also carbon in our groupsets, handle bars, seat posts and wheel sets. Those parts are not more recyclable than a carbon frame, but al least they have less impact on the ride qualities and are less fragile than a carbon frame.

The premium steel tubes we use to built your frame are from Italy. The design, measuring, miter cutting, welding, paintwork, assembling...happens in Flanders, the beating heart of cycling.

A lot of brands don't dare to talk about this item. That's exactly why we do. To make money in the cycling industry or any industry you have to bring down the production cost to an absolute minimum. We arrived at a stage where the production cost of a carbon frame of a famous brand is between 30$ en 100$. Are we jealous of them? Yes, because they make a lot of money. Are we proud? Absolutely. Because we make much better and long-term race cycles.

We build a complete road bike with a weight of 6.7 kg, which is even under the UCI limit. But we don't let weight define our bikes. When it comes to performance, weight is only part of the equation — and it's not even the most important part. Just because it doesn't matter how light your bike is if it doesn't fit perfectly your riding style or needs.
